Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi interacted with industry representatives and workers at the Nirman Industries’ loom factory in the Katargam Industrial Development Area and diamond polishers after he arrived in Surat city in poll-bound Gujarat.

He said, “Surat is the place which can compete with China and has been doing it. Jobs will either come to India or China. But instead of helping them, the government has destroyed their strength.”

Foreign and trade Ministers of 21 Pacific Rim economies were working on Wednesday to reach a consensus on open markets despite the U.S. pushback on “free trade” ahead of summit meetings in a Vietnamese coastal resort city this week.

In another break from precedent, Chinese President Xi Jinping himself gave the Trumps a tour of the imperial treasures of the Forbidden City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, before the two first couples watched Chinese opera and an acrobatic display.

A worker’s union called for a general strike in Catalonia on Wednesday. The regional government was sacked by Madrid and many of its members were jailed in a rebellion probe after pushing ahead with secession from Spain.

Two days after the deadline to fix potholes ended in Bengaluru, many major roads are yet to be made motorable. This is the fifth such deadline that has lapsed. The civic body has announced a new app to help citizens become a ‘pothole reporter’, which will go live later this week. Citizens can click pictures of potholes and send them mentioning the location.

Typhoon Damrey caused extensive damage ahead of this week’s Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit that will be attended by leaders from around the world, although those meetings that start on Wednesday in the central city of Danang will not be affected.

Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani celebrated his 90th birthday on Wednesday. He  invited 90 visually-impaired children as his “special guests” to his residence and personally fed delicacies to them. He also ate with the children, who are from the Lodhi Road Blind School. He later presented them with school bags. Mr. Advani is a seven-term MP from Gandhinagar,  Gujarat.

The face-off between the BJP and the Congress-led Opposition on demonetisation peaked on Wednesday, the first anniversary of the note ban, with the ruling party at the Centre observing it as ‘anti-black money day’ and the latter as ’black day’.

The DMK observed the first anniversary of demonetisation as a ‘black day’ and staged demonstrations in all district headquarters of Tamil Nadu, barring eight rain-hit districts.

The air quality index (AQI) for Delhi on Wednesday was worse at 484, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. The Delhi government has ordered the closure of schools till this week end. On Tuesday, the AQI touched 448 in a scale of 500. ”The air pollution has become unbearable affecting all.  It has engulfed the city. The reasons for this may be varied from stubble burning in Haryana and Punjab to vehicular/ construction pollution but the fact remains that it is affecting the health of Delhi’s citizens,” says a statement from Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s office. Read more

China Literature Ltd. leapt more than 70% percent in its debut in Hong Kong on Wednesday as the online publishing arm of Tencent Holdings Ltd benefited from a rising tide of local enthusiasm for tech stocks. Shortly after trading began, China Literature’s shares were up 73 percent at HK$95. The first-day gain of more than 37 percent ranks it among the three best-performing debuts this year by any company worth more than $500 million, according to Thomson Reuters data, reports Reuters
