Supplements have risen in popularity over the years with people opting for more natural remedies to treat their various health conditions.

From bloating to arthritis, supplements have been found in a number of studies to help ease symptoms.

But their benefits don’t end there – with skin being an important part of the body, experts recommend adding supplements to skincare regimes.

According to Holland and Barrett, a nutrient-packed diet works wonders to maintain healthy skin from the inside out, and recommends high vitamins and nutrients to help skin looking and feeling good, which are available to take in supplement form.

Vitamin E

This contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. The high street health shop explains this “can help protect against premature ageing and wrinkles as well as improve the appearance of scars and imperfections”.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A supports the repair of normal skin. It also advises: “Vitamin A can be sourced from foods like oily fish, eggs and liver.

“If you’re not a fan of offal, include spinach, carrots and sweet potatoes in your diet instead. These are all good sources of beta-carotene which our bodies covert into vitamin A.”

Vitamin C

This is particularly useful for skin as it contributes to normal collagen formation which supports skin strength, says Holland and Barrett.

It adds the essential vitamin is also found in a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, including oranges, strawberries, broccoli and potatoes.

Biotin

This is a B-complex vitamin that contributes to keeping skin healthy.

As well as being available in supplement form it is found in a wide range of foods including eggs, nuts and whole grains.

Iodine

According to studies, iodine keeps dry skin at bay and relates the moisture levels of the skin.

Holland and Barrett explained this is found naturally in seawater, rocks and some types of soil.

Zinc

Along with helping to heal wounds, zinc may keep skin healthy. It adds: “Boost your intake of zinc by eating meat, shellfish, dairy products and wheat germ.”

Adding vitamin D supplements to your diet could help to prevent signs of hair loss.

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to hair loss, so taking supplements every day may help to ward off alopecia, said registered dietitian Kayla McDonell.

The vitamin, which is sometimes known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’, may help to create new hair, she said.

It works by producing new hair follicles – parts of the scalp where new strands of hair can form.
