You may not realize it. But, your skin is constantly being inundated by indoor and outdoor pollutants—including from all of your digital devices. Environmental pollution can cause skin stress, fatigue, and inflammation, all of which can lead to premature aging. Luckily, performance-based skincare is catching up to the rigorous demands of our daily lives and offering protection.
HydroPeptide, an anti-aging, luxury skincare brand that delivers clinical results to consumers and professionals, just launched their Anti-Wrinkle + Detox Collection, a line-up of products that combat environmental pollution, including the HEV/blue light your devices give off.
Dr. Neal Kitchen, HydroPeptide’s Chief Operating Officer & Chief Geneticist tells me, “Environmental pollution can be broadly defined as anything that negatively impacts the skin, but typically refers to man-made pollution such as car exhaust, cigarette smoke, etc. Recently, environmental pollution also refers to indoor sources such as digital screens and artificial light. HydroPeptide’s latest products in our Anti-Wrinkle+Detox Collection were specifically designed to combat these negative stimuli by helping to reduce inflammation, remove physical debris and fight free radical damage as well as by creating a protective shield and fortifying skin to better protect itself.”
HydroPeptide launched in 2004 and has revolutionized skincare through epigenetic science and peptide technology. Vice President of the company, Chris Pachuilo tells me, “The brand was built on the belief that peptides could revolutionize skin care through their ability to affect positive change in the skin without irritation or down time. The original founders wanted to combine this emerging technology with a luxury experience and professionals quickly embraced this unique combination.”
Director of Education, Erin Larson continues, “Peptides are messenger molecules that work on a cellular level to increase hydration, reduce visible lines and wrinkles, and enhance the skin’s natural luminosity. They are versatile in their ability to positively impact a wide range of skin concerns. Peptides can often be a star ingredient on their own or they can work synergistically with other ingredients to create an even more beneficial impact on the skin—this flexibility is part of why we love them.”
I had never heard of the term “epigenetics,” so I asked Kitchen if he could explain the term, to which he responded, “Epigenetics studies how our genes are expressed based on hereditary and environmental factors. I am particularly excited for the impact epigenetics will have on skincare. Scientists are now using the principles behind epigenetics to create groundbreaking skincare formulas that impact cellular health. Anti-aging epigenetic skin care shows us how to positively influence the skin’s expression patterns by leveraging products and treatments that help signal the skin to look and act younger from the inside out.”
The new four piece Anti-Wrinkle + Detox Collection includes: the Bambusa Blackhead Banisher , a blackhead clearing strip that’s infused with charcoal, antibacterial volcanic ash, and antioxidant-rich bamboo extract to gently and effectively draw out congestion and reduce the look of pores around the nose. HydroActive Cleanse , cleansing cloths that remove makeup and pollution infused with micellar and activated water with moisture-balancing peptides to provide hydration. HydraFlora , a pore-perfecting essence rich in both pre and probiotics to keep the skin’s microbiome balanced as well as a blend of botanical extracts brimming with antioxidants that protect the skin from free radical damage. Somnifera Root Mist , a hydrating, soothing and pollution-blocking skin mist enriched with Somnifera Root Extract, which protects against damaging blue light and atmospheric pollution. Formulated with HydrO18™ Activated Water™, this spray replenishes lost moisture and revives the look of skin over or under makeup throughout the day.
I love all of the products in the new collection. But, my two favorites are the HydraFlora and the Somnifera Root Mist. HydraFlora isn’t simply a toner. It helps keep the microbiome of the skin in a symbiotic state. Kitchen tells me, “Bacteria are found in the microflora on our skin and they are vitally important for maintaining the overall balance of our skin. They can help to reduce inflammation, balance pH, fight free radicals, improve oxygenation and support healthy collagen. Probiotics are the good bacteria themselves; these are the live bacteria that live on our skin. Probiotic extracts, which is what HydroPeptide uses, are extracts taken from probiotics and used to nourish and support the probiotics on our skin. It’s a similar concept to plant extracts. Similarly, prebiotics are the “food” that probiotics eat, so they help support healthy bacteria on our skin as well. We don’t use any live bacteria in HydroPeptide products so you don’t have to worry about refrigeration or expiration.”
The Somnifera Root Mist is at my desk or in my purse at all times. I give myself a few quick sprays anytime my skin needs a little pick me up or is feeling dry and instantly my skin looks dewy and revived. Kitchen continues, “Somnifera Root Mist is a daily-use mist with blue light protection that helps our skin combat fatigue and damage caused by environmental pollution as well as indoor pollution from digital screens and fluorescent lighting. Since it is recommended to use Somnifera Root Mist multiple times a day we felt it was essential to incorporate HydrO18™ Activated Water™ for an added hydration benefit to nourish the skin and even help set makeup. HydrO18 Activated Water is considered “smart water”. Standard water in a formulation does not hydrate the skin. By adding HydrO18 to the formulation, the water is activated so that true hydration is achieved. Studies have shown that the unique solution of macadamia glycerides found in HydrO18 effectively deliver water into the skin. The water is truly absorbed as opposed to evaporating out.”
There’s a lot to love about HydroPeptide’s products. Number one is the results. Number two is their pragmatic approach to ingredients. All HydroPeptide products are formulated using clean ingredients and are free of gluten, fragrance, parabens, phenoxyethanol, polyethylene glycol, phthalates and sulfates. They are never tested on animals and are dermatologist tested and recommended. Operations Project Manager and Master Esthetician, Nicole W. tells me, “HydroPeptide takes a “clean science” approach. We hand pick the most effective ingredients from science and nature and always ensure that every ingredient meets our high standards for sustainable sourcing, quality and efficacy. While we love using plant-based ingredients, it is also important to combine them with signaling ingredients like peptides, vitamins and retinol. Lab-created ingredients are often more beneficial for the skin as well as from an environmental and “clean-ingredient” perspective because they are less resource intensive and are not exposed to environmental pollutants.”
