MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – In today’s fast-paced society it can be pretty hard to avoid one of the biggest causes of hair loss.
“The primary cause of hair loss in today’s world is stress,” said Michelle Whitaker, Cosmetology and Esthetics Instructor at Northern Michigan University. “We live in a high-stress society and as hair dressers and cosmetologists, people will come in and ask us those questions they’ll be experiencing hair coming out, hair thinning and one of the first questions we’ll ask them is if they’ve undergone any major stresses in their life.”
Other factors can also include dietary changes, genetics and even starting a new medication.
“Hair loss can be a hereditary factor, male pattern baldness can happen a lot and that can be a hereditary factor a lot of times. When women will experience hair loss, if there’s hereditary factors that come into play there from mother, grandmother, father side of the family,” said Whitaker.
There are preventative steps that can be taken so hair loss it does not get any worse.
“Try and keep your stress levels at a normal rate which sometimes can be hard to do and to make sure that you have a balanced diet and proper nutrition,” said Whitaker.
In some cases, like baldness and with conditions like Alopecia, hair loss is permanent, but there are still steps people can take to help cover up sparse areas.
“If it is permanent and it can’t be addressed with a certain medication or a product, if their doctor and their hairdresser can’t help them out, there are surgical implants you can do for hair loss,” said Barb Bahrman, Owner at U.P. Hair Company.
For anyone worried about hair loss, Michelle and Barb recommend seeing a hairdresser to assess the situation.
