Long days on set with heavy makeup, busy nights out at multiple events and tons of travel—the typical lifestyle of a Bollywood celebrity can easily wreak havoc on their skin and hair. But through years of experience, the stars have gleaned advice from their mothers, dermatologists, hairstylists, makeup artists and fitness experts on how best to take care of themselves. We culled together some of their best hacks in this read, so you can get all the information you need in one place.
Deepika Padukone’s skincare advice is to keep it simple
Deepika Padukone’s primary advice to maintain her glowing skin is to stay the course and keep it simple. While she favours matte makeup, her skin is usually luminous and radiant beneath. “In addition to drinking lots of water and keeping myself hydrated, I avoid using too many products on my skin. I keep it simple,” she told Vogue India in 2017. Padukone also stressed the importance of complying with her skincare routine no matter how tired or lazy she felt. “I am most particular about removing all my makeupand keeping my skin clean before I go to bed. No matter how tired I am or how hectic my day has been, I always make it a point to take it off.”
Jacqueline Fernandez is a fan of home remedies
Jacqueline Fernandez might be a makeup and hairstyle chameleon, but when it comes to skincare and haircare, she doesn’t stray too far from ingredients found in her kitchen. “My secret is an egg white mask for the hair and a beer rinse for shine,” she once revealed to Vogue India. “It is very important to have a hair massage as your hair should be in top condition before styling. The conditioner you use is all important—hair needs that extra coating.” Even for skin emergencies, she looks to her fridge. “I often use dahi and honey in a pack to cool and soothe my face. I also use ice packs for my face and eyes as pick-me-ups—not applied directly though. Wrap ice cubes in thin muslin or tissue and then place them gently on cheeks and eyes. I also sometimes use honey as a lip balm,” she said.
Anushka Sharma follows the inside-out beauty philosophy
Anushka Sharma is a proponent of a holistic beauty philosophy. “It’s important to exercise not just to be healthy and fit but it even reflects on your skin and hair,” she told Vogue India in 2015. “I try to do simple but effective things to keep my skin looking healthy and flawless. I drink tons and tons of water. Also I believe in eating right. You are what you eat!,” she added. When we spoke to her about it again in 2017, we found that her philosophy has remained the same. She confirmed the secrets to her glowing complexion then, saying, “Drinking lots of water, eating healthy and moisturising my skin regularly.”
Priyanka Chopra subscribes to a multi-step skincare routine
Priyanka Chopra’s busy schedule calls for heavy makeup on most days. To compensate for the toll it takes on her skin, she follows an indulgent skincare and haircare routine. She told Vogue, “I think the biggest challenge for both my hair and skin is keeping it healthy. Given the nature of my job, my hair and skin take quite a beating, so it’s important for me to take care of it. I currently use StriVectin moisturiser and Shiseido sunscreen. I have a hectic schedule and my hair goes through a lot on set. When choosing a haircare product, I always look for something that will nourish my hair and lend it a smooth texture and lots of healthy shine without weighing it down.” She sticks to the basics with her skincare routine too. “You can’t go wrong with basic cleansing, toning, moisturising,” she once said. “I’m committed to following a proper skincare routine because of how badly I mistreat my skin—wearing makeup all day, harsh lighting, etc—and because of the solid beauty advice my mom gave me growing up. Right now, I’m indulging in the SK-II sheet masks—they are the best masks hands down—and La Prairie Cellular Night Repair Cream and Jo Malone body butter.”
Sonam Kapoor likes to leave it to the professionals
Sonam Kapoor Ahuja likes to indulge in professional treatments to care for her skin and body in the best way possible. Way back in 2011, she told Vogue India, “I religiously follow the principle of ‘cleansing-toning-moisturising’. I also swear by facials by Dr Rekha Sheth.” A fan of spa treatments, she let us in on her favourite ones to unwind and relax. “The Royal Spa Facials and body massages at the Myrah Spa are amazing. The Six Senses Spa in Bangkok, Espa at the Leela, and the spa at the Hotel Martinez in Cannes are just a few of my favourites,” she revealed.
